Things that suck about WoW.

June 6th, 2007 | by TJ |

I actually have no complaints about game mechanics, the grinding, raiding, or anything like that because… I just don’t do anything I don’t want to do.

No, no, what drives me crazy in the game is exactly the same thing that drives me crazy in real life – other people.

Specifically, two attitudes held by “other people” that are just so illogical/infuriating to me that after weeks on end of silence, I will actually appear in /g to rip someone up one side and down the other when these hot buttons come up.

First of all – have you ever met this type of person? Comes out that someone has already hit 70 on the server. Or someone already has some new flying thingie. Or some guild has cleared all the way through whatever instance. Or SOME major accomplishment has been… accomplished. And this person’s reaction to that? It’s never, “Wow, impressive!” It is always, without fail, “Yeah, I guess that’s easy… if you HAVE NO LIFE.” Setting aside how that statement alone makes me see red, add on top of that that these are always the SAME PEOPLE who, when they finally hit 70, or when they manage to get exalted with 342 factions, and when they want to do whatever instance but can’t find enough level appropriate people, they’re the ones who are always going to say, “God! Noobs! What the hell have you been doing all this time?”

So… anyone who does something faster than you has no life… and anyone who does anything slower than you is a total noob? So what I’m hearing is, the correct way to play this game is exactly the way and at exactly the pace that you do – one step faster or one step slower and you’ve got nothing but disdain. Right. There’s a healthy attitude.

When I see this happening in chat, I usually jump in with what I just said above, and then wonder this – did you ever consider that someone who did something faster than you is better at the game than you are – and could ever hope to be? Or that maybe someone who does something slower than you is… not as fucking lame as you are? I mean, like you said – anyone doing anything super fast obviously has no life, and you’re accomplishing things faster than some other people, so obviously, they must have more of a life than you do. By your own reasoning. You fucking loser.

Ahem.

AND YOU KNOW WHAT ELSE I HATE? The “It’s just a game” people. THE “IT’S JUST A GAME”PEOPLE!

You people need to go straight the goddamn hell to hell. The “it’s just a game” people never use that phrase when it might, and I’m stretching here when I say “might,” be appropriate. Like… like when you’ve just failed an escort quest for the 457th time, and they give you a nice, soothing “Take a deep breath, remember, it’s just a game,” in order to calm your frustration a bit and help you regain perspective.

NO! The “it’s just a game” people are the ones who are going to say something shitty about the way you play, or your spec, or your gear, for no good reason, needle at you, piss you off, question your parentage, make inflamatory statements about your personal life choices, fuck your sister, kick your dog, incite an entire guild into a goddamn riot and then say “You guys need to chill out… it’s just a GAME!” Or, when someone you’ve been playing with for months, for ages, grouped with, raided with, chatted with, got close with, talked to every day, does something really really shitty to you – maybe talks about you behind your back, or, you know, something similarly hurtful, the “it’s just a game” person tells you that your feelings shouldn’t be hurt. Because it’s just a game.

And that’s when I buy a plane ticket, fly to their house, kick them in the junk, and tell them as they curl in the fetal position and gasp for breath, “What’s your fucking problem? It’s just a game. And looking over at your screen there, I can still see you’re wearing a green or two. Noob.”

Hey! I was NOT curled in the fetal position…I was trying to take a nap, on my side, while you kicked me, and I was cold so I curled up in a little ball. Then, some dust flew in my eye causing it to water uncontrollably. Earlier, when I was washing my hands the sink shot water all over my crotch, and when I sat down to dry my hands…I must have sat in some pudding or something….NONE of this had anything to do with you kicking me, that TOTALLY did not hurt at all or anything. It was a total coincidence.

you should post a video of you kicking someone in the junk. then i can comment and be all ‘behold! the mighty!!’.

the problem is, you’ll probably kick ME in the junk for suggesting it.

I almost entirely agree with your post. Although I have had to use the “It’s just a game” phrase in self defense. Sometimes in PvP when I kill an Alliance player they will create a character on Horde and start yelling obscenities at me. That’s usually when I have to use the phrase, and hope that it works :-P.

Dude, calm down. It’s just a game.

    :-P

I agree with everything but one aspect (which is something that annoys ME about WoW players):

WoW (yes, I’m sure I will annoy some people in saying this) requires 90% time, 10% skill. If you know how to use WASD, space to jump, click to attack, you’ve almost mastered the game. Learn some crowd control, roles in parties, and some information on quests/instances and you’re in great shape to hit 70.

That being said, it truly *is* the one who plays the most and, not necessarily (but it helps), has no life that will complete things first. It doesn’t take much of skill, just persistence.

The problem is, (and I’m pulling this statistic out of my ass), for 90% of people who play WoW, it is their first real game long-term experience. Blizzard did such an amazing job marketing the game that the whole world knows about it. Therefore, most people think if they can get to 70 on WoW, they are good at videogames.

You are sadly mistaken. WoW is a fun passtime, but it does not make you a ‘gamer’.

Anyways. Enough. I’m sure you’re sick of reading my opinions.

I agree with both Jer and the main Rant at the top of the page. All MMOs are strictly based on the amount of time you play them. You can’t just own at an MMO unless you spend the time to learn the schematics of the game. You can’t just pick up WoW and own at PvE/PvP unless you learn how to work it. Of course, there are universal tactics in all MMOs: how to party, tactics, some PvPing, but not much. They aren’t like racing games where you can have a knack for cutting nice corners, or an FPS where you just have god-like reflexes and awesome strategy/team cooperation skills. As far as WoW’s players go, they are mainly dumb insecure assholes that talk shit because althought you’re better or worse they NEED something to say to you so they can feel good about their situation. And if they do, THEY’RE the loser, if you don’t then you’re obviously living happier than them. Just look at them and in a condescending tone tell them: “If you stop being a dick I can show you your first vagina. Of course, it’ll be your fat retarded sister’s, but that’s all you’re gonna get.”
