"Another thing coming" instead of "another thinK coming." This is a slangy phrase to begin with, since "think" is a verb and not a noun, but it's a THINK. You had a thought, it was wrong, now you need to THINK again. I love thesimpledollar.com but he gets that one wrong and he's adamant that he's right.

Also, it's iceD tea. The tea has been chilled, it's not hot, it's ICED. I think people miss this one, like supposeD to, because the T at the beginning of "to" has the same sound as the D at the end of supposed. But as TJ keeps pointing out, if people pay attention to what they are saying, it will make sense!

Thank you for this post and the comments - I have thoroughly enjoyed myself.

D, do we have the same mother-in-law?!? Mine is always relating conversations to me with "I says to her, I says..." I'm trying to tell myself it's her cute quirk.

A man I know who is a professional public speaker has several unfortunate verbal tics, mostly that he starts every other sentence with "It seems to me that..." No, you're paid to give your opinion, JUST SAY IT.

I had an ex-boyfriend who insisted that all of these things didn't matter if you knew what he meant. Sure, I can figure out what people probably mean, but it greatly detracts from my reading experience when I have to slow down and carefully process the incorrect usage of your/you're, its/it's, etc., as well as substitute the correct spelling of words into their sentences. If I have to do these things then it takes more time to decipher meaning; why should I care or take the time to decipher what someone meant when they obviously don't care enough to take the time to write correctly. I'm also guilty of forming bad opinions about people who are particularly bad offenders and who know it and don't do anything to fix it.

We all make mistakes, especially when our fingers tend to type faster than we think, but the people who make more than is really excusable, don't care to correct them nor learn the proper usage really infuriate me.

Obviously way late to the party, but I found you via the Jonniker trackback. Three things come to mind:

1. I had a friend who would say "I really feel like he pigeonheld me."

2. Another friend says "let me tell you me." No matter how many times we tell him that he's mixing two phrases - "let me tell you" and "believe you me" (which is annoying as well) - he refuses to believe it.

3. This one is less wacky, but it annoys me so much: my mother-in-law often says "so I says." The worst part is that she has trouble formulating her thoughts because she's not the brightest bulb (yes I'm a snob), so this will often be a part of a longer phrase that goes like this: "Dave did this to me, so I says, I says, 'Dave, you shouldn't,' uh, I says, "you shouldn't....'" I just want to yell SPIT IT THE F OUT. And it's SAID. SO I SAID.

I must comment on "could/couldn't care less." I can see how this bugs people, but I always give people a pass on this one on the assumption that if they use "could care less," they are being ironic because obviously they mean "couldn't care less." Really, does anyone ever believe people are saying they do care when this phrase is used?

My husband knew the word "moot" until the Friends episode where Joey says, "Moo, like a cow's opinion." Ever since then, he second-guesses himself and makes it into a joke, substituting "a cow's opinion" because he can't remember which way is correct.

Ok, I'm going to comment, because I missed this the first time around.

"__ struck a cord with me."

I'm not sure how striking a rope or cable... well, maybe if you were playing a string instrument, and .. but then you would still be striking a CHORD.
