What did I miss, part 2.

See this post to play along.

Second question, also from Twitter. @illusionofchaos said,

@TemerityJane I personally would like to hear about you dying your hair purple. Unless I missed something, we never got the full story.

Oh yes, I did indeed dye my hair purple one day, but this was about all you heard of it:

1. Warning

2. Results

And that was that.

This is a good question, since I just had a dream about dyeing my hair purple again last night. So, here is what happened. I… decided I wanted to dye my hair purple. So, I bought the dye and I also bought bleach, as I have brown hair and the purple wouldn’t be purpley enough on brown hair. Around… wow, midnight-ish, I guess, one night in early September, I went over to my friend Michelle’s house, as she was all gung-ho to dye it for me.

So we started with the bleach, and afterwards, she tried to convince me to stay blonde for a few days before doing the purple, just to test it out. I had to veto that suggestion, though. Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against blonde. I was a blonde for a lot of years (I was in a car accident when I was 16, a pretty bad wreck, and dyed my hair blonde afterwards to help the spots around the scars on my head not stand out too much, and then just stuck with it through most of college), but this was not normal blonde. This was vintage Kelly Bundy blonde.

So, we moved right onto the purple. Afterwards, her shower looked like I had killed the Grimmace.

So, I had the purple hair. Seriously purple hair. And I really liked it, and the people around me liked it pretty well, too. Just like my eyebrow ring, it kind of just suits my head, if that makes sense. I mean, yeah, purple hair is weird, but it went with my head and the rest of me so well that you kind of don’t even notice it, like the eyebrow ring. Most people who meet me wouldn’t be able to tell you my eyebrow is pierced, that’s how good it goes on my head.

Anyway, so I spent the first couple of days really purple – neck, hands, etc – until I got some gloves. And the thing about deep color like that is that it fades pretty quickly, so you have to keep it up. A lovely reader here, I don’t quite remember the name off the top of my head, gave me the advice to mix a little bit of purple into my conditioner, and that did indeed keep the color extremely bright and shiny.

Purple maintenance is a bitch, though, and eventually I was going longer and longer between touch ups, and weird blonde would show through, and eventually my hair was blurple.

I stopped keeping it up and I am mostly brunette now, though the end few inches of my hair and part of my bangs are still bright blonde. Surprisingly, in he back, there is still a noticable tinge of purple in the blonde spots.

Lately, I have been tempted to dye my hair again, but I keep going back and forth.

  • I can’t just straight up dye it because my hair is two different colors at the moment.
  • I could bleach it, but do I really want to go through bleaching my hair again?
  • Do I want to do purple again, or something different?
  • Can Phil be counted on to bleach and dye my hair as fastiduously as Michelle did? I don’t have a Michelle here to do it.
  • It’s been a long time since I’ve had my completely natural hair color on display, and it’s kind of pretty, so maybe I should leave it be.
  • I don’t work in an office, so when else in my life am I really going to GET to have interesting colored hair?
  • That purple really did look damn good.
  • BlizzCon is coming up and I’d like my hair to be all one color – but I don’t want to be mistaken for a gnome.

Ideas, Internet?

I say either way is cool, but speaking from experience, I’ve recently let my hair grow back out to its natural color after bleaching it through college and even after. I forgot just how pretty my natural color was! (Although my mom didn’t, as she constantly reminded me when I dyed my hair.) Anyway, you might be pleasantly surprised if you go that route! So I guess I’m learning toward the growing your natural color back in. :)

@Adlib: Do we have the same mom?

I go back and forth on my natural color. It IS mostly natural now, and I don’t hate it.

However, at 27 years old, natural is also starting to include a decent amount of gray & silver.

    No, sir. Oh no, sir.

Red is always a good option. None of that pussy auburn or naturally-occurring red though. If you’re gonna rock the red, it’s gotta be full-on candy-apple fire-engine corvette red. Like a can of Coke, red.

Dye it blue for Blizzcon, of course!

Hot pink will possibly give you gnome-vibes..I know it does for me. Red is always a good route to go – ofc, I would say so since I’m a fan of dying my own hair red. Dark, deep red.. *rawr*

May I share a hair colour story? Maybe you’ll benefit. Or maybe not.

In high school I died my hair the red that teh Khol Abides up there is talking about – basically a Ronald McDonald red. I did it not because I wanted to be cool or different or anything, like you it just “suited my head”. It was super bright but I never thought it really looked weird or anything. I kept it like that for probably about 5 years through the end of high school and into university. Ususally it was just straight-up red, sometimes I threw in some pink, blonde or orange highlights to keep things interesting (BTW my cousin’s a stylist and these were top of the line colours – very important if you’re thinking of going red because cheap reds fade to crap in about a week).

ANYHOO I reached a point where I knew I just couldn’t do the red any longer; within the span of a week I was pointed out three times by young children to thier mothers – “Mommy! Red hair! Red hair!” It never bothered me before but for whatever reason I decided then and there that red was just not for me anymore.

I fixed it to brown and eventually let it go natural. Lately I’ve been playing with some fun blonde highlights. I just don’t want that kind of attention from kids. I’m not Dora.

From quasi-lurker to huge commenter in one post. Hope it helps (or makes you laugh)! Keep the “What did I miss” posts coming!

you could always go to a salon and have them strip the dye from your hair – or just go to have it bleached and then colored a pretty pink :o

I’m a guy, just so you know. My opinion is to go natural. Crazy hair is nice, for a change, every now and then. If it’s that way every day it becomes… odd. Which is worse than normal and not as cool as crazy.

    Natural hair has many plusses.
    1.) Easy maintenance.
2.) Easy to spice up. (just add pig-tails and some librarian glasses)
3.) Your mom will like it.
    4.) Phil will like it.
5.) You will like all of the above. (except maybe the librarian glasses, but come on… think of others every now and then!)

and did I mention Easy maintenance?

There are only two negatives to having “crazy hair” though. But they are not small.
1.) It’s a PITA to upkeep, and as you pointed out, you have to trust someone a lot to do it in the first place.

2.) When people find hair in their food, they will KNOW it’s yours. You can’t avoid it or lie your way out of it. You just have to go and get them a new plate, and a hair net.
