I was a hopeless liberal arts major, then went back and got my accounting degree. Went from no job prospects to working on Sundays at a big-4 accounting firm during tax season. Ugh...

Finally I found a reasonably happy middle ground at a great company. These days my boss' boss always asks me, "How's your work-life balance?" out of genuine concern, which always makes me laugh. "Work-life balance" was one of the many terms that the HR types back at the accounting firms used to throw around casually, as if it actually had any meaning.

The smiling HR types would waltz in at 9am with starbucks lattes and leave promptly at 5, take off early on Fridays, and then send emails from their blackberries to all the accountants, reminding them of work-life balance.

I wish I'd had WoW back in those days. I could have pretended my opponents in arena were HR managers, with their evil time-consuming email surveys and empty promises ... ZOMG I just realized something! ALL HR TYPES ARE BLOOD ELVES!! They ARE!! With their stylish haircuts, less than genuine smiles, maniacal laughs, and holier-than-thou mannerisms.**

Yes, RL > WoW... but sometimes there are stark parallels between the two.

**My apologies to any genuinely good people out there who happen to work as HR staff in accounting firms. It's just that I haven't met you.

Sweet, merciful... Wow. Um... wow.

Thank god for having an International Studies major, I much rather prefer not having marketable prospects or a job at all to that!

...mmmMMMMmmmm... Yogurt!
On another topic, it'll all be over soon. My wife's an accountant, so tax time is "lock MYSELF away for a few months" until the storm passes. :) Have fun, and good to see you don't seem to be locked from your blog again today.
