A sad realization.

I think I’ve mentioned it once before, in a story I haven’t finished yet, but when I was in college, I worked for the Department of Resident Life. For my first two years, I worked at a 24 hour service desk in various dorms, and then once I moved off campus, I worked as an office assistant in one of the community offices, again, in a dorm.

One day, I was standing outside in a quad area in the middle of a bunch of dorms, on a short break having a cigarette, and a kid came over and asked if he could bum one. Now, I usually don’t have any problem with that, though for politeness’s sake, I try very hard to refrain from saying “Sure, but go smoke it somewhere else,” because often, as was the case this day, the person seems to feel obligated to light up right there and keep me company.

Sigh.

Kid: So… you live here?

TJ: No, I work in the office in here.

Kid: Oh. Cool cool. So…

TJ: *blank stare*

Kid: So… what do you do in there?

TJ: Oh, lots of different things…

Kid: Cool, cool. Like what?

TJ: Um… well, you see all those signs? (Colorful, laminated signs on dowels stuck into the ground around the quad, advertising a coffee hour or some shit.) I did that.

Kid: Oh, you put those up? That’s cool.

TJ: Oh, well, no, I didn’t put them up… (go AWAY, go AWAY)

Kid: Made them then? That’s cool, too.

TJ: Um, well, no, not exactly…
