The world of blogging has CHANGED.
May 6th, 2010 | by TJ |What you need to know for this to make sense: Crimeny.net was my old blog, back when dinosaur bloggers roamed the earth, and I used the name “Lucky” on that site because I was still somewhat afraid of the Internet and didn’t want anyone to know that my name was Kelly and I went to the University of Maryland, even though everyone (“everyone” being the 27 people who were blogging at the time) actually knew that and still knows it now. Anyway. That’s what you need to know.
I was going through some old email a couple of days ago and found this:
Check out the date on that email, wow.
And my 2005 response to such an email?
(Ok, so not THAT much has changed since 2005.)
And I never wrote back again. I never even found out what the offer was. I think my response was pretty standard for bloggers who were pretty established at that time. Especially in terms of considering a blog a “business.” Things are way different now, I think. Way different. I don’t really have much comment other than that, I am interested to see what the Internet – especially bloggers who have been around as long as I have or longer – have to say about it.
I don’t think it’s a good thing OR a bad thing. I was just looking through old emails and thought it was an INTERESTING thing.
(PS – Hello to the people who I know used to read Crimeny.net yet I never got around to telling in the last 3 years that Temerity-Jane.com and Crimeny.net – same person! I’m not dead! Hello!)

I think today, I’d take a chance on getting $300/month for my blog. :)

I think most people would, and I think a LOT of people start blogs waiting for that offer to come in.

Fortunately, I never had those stars (or dollar signs) in my eyes. Had I kept blogging about WoW, I might have been able to finagle something, but I’m not one to keep doing something I am not enjoying, no matter what the ‘rewards.’

Wow, someone was way ahead of her time! I started blogging in 2006, and never had a glimmer about getting paid for posting for at least a year or two after that. Nowadays you practically can’t write one blog post on a new blog without someone going HEY trade links with me and make money woo woo woo! in your Spam folder. I haven’t posted on my main blog in months, and I still get people writing to me about ads or whatever. I usually ignore them, though one of these times I probably will ask them if they’ve read my last post and noticed the fact that it was dated in friggin’ January. I mean, if you want to pay me for a dead blog… /shrug.
I never got into the paid posting thing because I just don’t have it in me to write stuff for other people. Heck, I even got in with a publisher that wanted me to review books, and I couldn’t hold up that deal after the first one. FREE BOOKS and I couldn’t hack it. Add me to the “Total Moron Monday” list!
