I totally just invented my own niche.
August 10th, 2010 | by TJ |No matter how strange of a topic I come up with for this blog (see – Settle This posts), there is always at least one someone – usually several someones – who have experienced the same thing, or have thought the same thing, or feel the same way as I do about whatever ridiculous minutae I have decided to discuss that day. It’s pretty rare that I feel at all isolated – when it comes to blogging, at least.
However, while details and random thoughts are one thing, overall topic and lifestyle and life situations are a completely different animal. I think that there was a time in the history of this blog – or maybe two or even three times – when I was significantly more relatable than I am now.
Now, a lot of the blogs I like to read are those of women with children, but that’s certainly not the only kind of blog out there by a long shot. There were plenty of blogs out there in the same situation as I was at different points in my life.
There was the time at the start of this blog, when I worked at an accounting firm, and was extremely busy at certain points of the year. Plenty of bloggers – lots, really – work at full time jobs outside the home, and are often busy to the point of insanity.
Or when I was playing World of Warcraft a lot more often. There are always about four skrillion people within shouting distance willing to talk about World of Warcraft.
Or when I had a really, really terrible job. I think a whole lot of people find that to be reasonably relatable. Especially now, where people feel like they have to stick with the job they have rather than take the risk of not being able to find something else.
Of course, I was also in a long distance relationship for a while there, and the Internet is full of people who have been in the same situation, or who are in the same situation, or who have come out the other side of such a situation.
But now, I don’t work in an office – terrible or busy or otherwise. I still don’t have any kids. I don’t play WoW at all anymore – I actually cancelled my account for the first time since 2005 a few months back. The longest-distance my relationship gets right now is when I’m at home and he’s at work, and even then, we’re still on the same Air Force base all day long.
I think that a whole bunch of posts on this site have shown that no matter how strange something you think about or feel might be, there area metric asston of people who will pop up out of nowhere to say, “Hey, me, too!” And there are also blogs on just about every subject and niche and lifestyle that you could imagine.
So tell me, Internet – where are the stay at home dog owner bloggers? Or the bloggers who are extremely disturbed by changes to their Sabrina the Teenage Witch – Full House – Grounded for Life midday sitcom schedule? The bloggers who don’t post a lot of pictures because there’s just not all that much in the house to take a picture of?
I have been able to find people who agree with me on The Peak of the Banana, drawn out there freakishly even-sided camps of tooth brushing, and raised hives on word-nerds all over. If there are people who share banana thoughts and toothbrush thoughts with me, there has to be at least a few Little House-watching, dog fight-breaker-upper, generic pop tart-eating bloggers out there somewhere.
And if not? I shall corner the niche. The keywords will be… “Stefano DiMera,” “Nature’s Miracle cleanser,” and… “Temerity Jane.” Because it’s my niche.

I’m gonna be a huge Nosy McNoserson and ask if you’d be willing to give me the password to the horrible job post. :/
Also, I’m sort of one big toe in that niche, but I don’t want to steal any glory so I’ll point out some differences.
1. I prefer Grey’s Anatomy on Lifetime from 1pm – 4pm.
2. No dogs.
3. That’s all I’ve got.

I emailed the password to you – anyone else who needs it should also feel free to just ask.
As for being one toe in, all you need to do is start a blog and get a dog, and you can totally be in my niche with me.

Wow.. you pretty much nailed my niches all at once! Full-time working mother who plays wow and is married to her previous long-distance relationship honey. GET OUT OF MY MIND!
I hope to have dogs someday, and plan on picking your brain on how to live with them without going nuts.

I can help you live with them, but not with the going nuts part.

How about a niche for people who were there at the time and actually REMEMBER the password for that post without looking it up?
>.>
Other than that, count me as one more person who is totally not in that niche…. though I would love to be!

I’m a fairly new reader and I now feel the need to tell you that the Peak Of The Banana (for me) is while it’s still a little green and tart. And also that I use lukewarm water to brush my teeth because they are sensitive to cold.
May I have that password please?

Emailed the password.
As for the banana and toothbrushing, you and Phil are pretty much the same person. The same TOTALLY WRONG person!
Heh.

I’m kinda in that niche TJ. I work from home, I have 2 dogs and I play WoW. I used to blog but kinda lost steam on it. Lately I keep thinking about starting a new, broader in scope, blog but can’t think of a name I like >.> I don’t watch any daytime TV though.. mainly because if I’m not working or cleaning my first choices for leisure are gaming or reading.
Also are you going to take me up on my offer to do nerdy wordy battle in Words with Friends? :D

I’m a little bit shocked that Stefano is still around. He must be like 80 at this point.
At the end of my first pregnancy when I was only working part time, I’d hightail it home so I could watch back-to-back episodes of The O.C. on Soap. And when I was on Maternity leave w/Oscar and he was a wee thing, I’d spend all day watching that show with the three sister witches, what was that called?? With Shannon Doherty and Alyssa Milano?

That was Charmed. Good show right up there with Angel but below Buffy or Firefly.

YES! Charmed! While on mat. leave I managed to watch the entire series, start to finish, if you can believe it. I liked it quite a bit, up until that last season or two when that blond chick joined the cast and ruined everything.

I’m so glad I’m not the only one disturbed by abc family constantly changing their afternoon line-up. Some people like consistency!
Oh, and can I get the password? I want to be nosy!

Cancelled your WoW account? You’re coming back for Cataclysm, right? lol
Seriously, how many times have you heard that? We still haven’t gotten through ICC yet and we have people giving up until the explansion!

Well, now I want to be all nosy and know the password!
As for my niche, is there one for people who are back living with their parents while they finish their dissertations and try to save enough money to move to the other side of the world? (It’s not a particularly *fun* niche, is it?)

I am a stay-at-home because I am a student, and I just got a dog yesterday! I am also a blogger, I just usually blog about gaming. I have a Brinkley. I’m nervous about it though.

Nervous about having a Brinkley? As long as he’s not a puppy, after a short bit of settling in, you’ll have an easy time with a golden!

I too would like to know the password as I was recently fired from a so awful I hated it but felt like I had to keep it job. I didn’t try to get fired, but I didn’t try not to.
Until recently I was home all day, although my midday tv viewing choices tended more towards the game show network. Did you know Carlton (of Fresh Prince fame) hosts a game show every day at 1:00 (Central time)? Pretty amazing.
I would like to get a dog and work from home but neither my job or my apartment would allow that at the moment. I will join your niche when it does.

I was devestated when Boy Meets world from 7-7:30 in the morning had to start over from season 1 episode 1. Seriously, who watches the first season, I hate all first seasons. It ruined my day that I couldn’t watch the Cory and Toepanga drama unfold before work!
